Is robotic prostatectomy better than open surgery? probable
Positions

The first minimally invasive results were poor
The first laparoscopic radical prostatectomies took a mean of 9.4 hours, and their surgeons concluded in 1997 that the approach offered no advantage over open surgery.

Adoption outran the evidence
Lowrance and colleagues wrote in 2010 that robotic prostatectomy had spread rapidly despite a lack of high-quality evidence of better cancer control, safety or cost-effectiveness.

Programmes built around the robot
After Binder and Kramer's first robotic prostatectomy in 2000, Menon's programme in Detroit, described as the first cancer-oriented robotics programme, developed the operation; a single-port system followed in 2018.

Evidence
The kit verifies the early laparoscopic results, the warning about evidence, and the regulatory history. The film goes further: head-to-head trials have not shown better cure or function than a skilled open surgeon, but robotic surgery bleeds far less. The screenplay note and credits cite Yaxley et al. (Lancet 2016) for this, but no research dossier records or checks that trial, so the site does not yet publish it (see gaps).
Current standing
On the kit's evidence, robotic prostatectomy spread faster than proof of its advantages. The comparative trial evidence the film summarises awaits a checked source.
