Debates ยท II. The King's Permission
Left or right: the side of the perineal cut in the Sushruta Samhita probable
Positions
-
The left side
The main instruction places the incision on the left of the perineal raphe, a barley-corn's breadth away (pp. 389-390).
-
The right side
The text adds that several authorities recommend the opening on the right of the raphe for the convenience of the operation (p. 390).
Evidence
The text records its own disagreement. The screenplay's note places the right-side sentence in the main text (verse 13); the research dossier asked for a check on whether it could be the translator's note.
Current standing
The film treats the dissent as part of the ancient text: 'Even then, surgeons argued over which side to cut.'
